Leroy et al. (2002) describe a very strong earthquake in 447:
"An extremely violent earthquake occurred in Istanbul in AD 447, with a felt area over the Sea of Marmara and surroundings, including Hellespont, which featured the destruction of many towns; substantial sea waves, subsidence, dried fountains, inundation, landslides, cracks opening the ground and aftershocks were recorded for months afterwards."
Altinik et al. (2001) describe the effects around Izmit with dead fish on land and grounded ships.
